Join us in person for the November 2023 nf-core hackathon!
This hackathon will be held in advance of the Nextflow Summit 2023 in Boston, America 🇺🇸. You can find out more information about the summit at https://summit.nextflow.io.

The Boston nf-core hackathon will be in person only, without the hybrid / online features that we have used in other events (e.g., Gather Town). Anyone is free to join remotely, as we will be using the same GitHub Project boards and Slack communication as usual, but please be aware that we won’t actively be trying to run this as a hybrid event.
This hackathon is not meant to be a training event and is aimed at people that already have an understanding of Nextflow and/or nf-core. If you’re interested in learning Nextflow and nf-core, there are recordings of online workshops from September 2023 that cover foundational and advance Nextflow usage. See the Community Foundational Nextflow Training and Community Advanced Nextflow Training pages for more information and links to the training material.

Pre-hackathon checklist
Ensure you have read/signed up/joined/installed the following resources before the hackathon:
- Check you agree with the Code of Conduct of the event
- If you haven’t already, set up a GitHub account and join the nf-core GitHub organization
- Join the nf-core slack and the #hackathon-nov-2023 channel
- Have Nextflow, nf-core/tools, and one of Docker, Singularity, or Conda/Mamba installed on your computer
- Familiarize yourself with the documentation on the nf-core website
Groups
This nf-core hackathon does not have formalized projects. Instead, we have GitHub issues that are categorized into groups. The groups are used to help organise issues, discussion, and reporting during the hackathon. You are not restricted to staying in any single group and are free to change groups as you wish during the hackathon.
We will coordinate our work and the issues we are working on using a single GitHub project board. There will be a separate tab for each group where will collate relevant issues. You are welcome to add your own issues to the project board so others can join you.
Beginners
Slack:#hackathon-nov-2023-beginners For this hackathon, we will have no designated beginners group but will instead have a “beginners table”. You’re welcome to join to get help on how to contribute to open-source, and to meet other community contribution beginners.
Please note that attendees are expected to know the basics of building with Nextflow.

Pipelines Project Board
Slack:#hackathon-nov-2023-pipelines The pipelines group will focus on any pipeline-related work. This could be a DSL2 conversion of a pipeline, a new or improved feature for a pipeline, or an entirely new pipeline (please let us register a new pipeline already before the hackathon, following our guidelines).
Suggested projects / teams:
- Implementing nf-test within pipelines
- Adding new functionality to existing pipelines
- Updating pipelines to use the latest nf-core template, via template syncs
- Teams formed around work on specific pipelines
- Azure megatests roll-out in pipelines

nf-test Project Board
Slack:#hackathon-nov-2023-nf-test nf-test is a testing framework for Nextflow code. We want to start using it for all nf-core pipelines and modules. Some proof-of-concept work has already been done, with standardised implementation patterns mostly worked out, but there’s still a lot of work to add this in for all components.

Ops Project Board
Slack:#hackathon-nov-2023-ops The ops group welcomes anyone who wants to work on nf-core/ops. We’re making an effort to automate the behind the scenes orchestration of the nf-core repos.
Suggested projects / teams:
- Replace pipeline health with Terraform
- Add ops for Slack
- Change new docker image visability automatically
- Build multi-tool containers with Wave
- Use built in GitHub Actions temp dir for running tests
- Import nf-core GitHub org into Terraform
- Clean up Renovate version bumping in nf-core/modules

Social evening
Kick back and relax with fellow Hackathoners at Cheeky Monkey Brewing. This energetic brewpub offers its own beers and guest varieties, plus funky globally-inspired dishes. The venue has a game section with shuffleboard, pool, and other games where you can play with other Hackathoners!
Cheeky Monkey Brewing is a 30 min walk or 8 min drive from the Hilton Boston Park Plaza hotel.
All social activities are of course optional, but we hope to see as many people joining in as possible!
Code of conduct
Please note that our Code of Conduct applies to the Hackathon, and all participants need to abide by our guidelines to participate. We should all feel responsible for making nf-core events safe and fun for everyone.
You can also report any CoC violations directly to safety@nf-co.re. Our safety officers will contact you to follow up on your report.
In case of an immediate perceived threat at the hackathon, please reach out to any of staff or organizers on site.
